Take advantage of EC’s limited voter registration – Mahama rallies 18-yr-olds

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)'s 2024 flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, is urging Ghanaians aged 18 and up to take advantage of the Electoral Commission of Ghana's (EC) window of opportunity to register to vote for change in 2024.

Those who need to replace their missing voter ID cards should participate in the exercise beginning Tuesday, September 12.

He called the EC's next limited voter registration drive "the heart of democracy."

"The limited voter registration exercise will give those who are eligible to vote the opportunity to place their names on the voters' register," he stated in a Facebook Live address on Wednesday, September 6.

"It will also allow those replacing lost voter ID cards to transfer their votes from where they currently have them to their new polling station."

"In a nutshell, I am here to encourage you, wherever you are in Ghana or beyond, to take advantage of this exercise, which begins on September 12, 2023, if you do not have a voter ID card, especially if you have just turned 18."

The EC's restricted voter registration drive is set to conclude on Monday, October 2.

However, it will be done at the Commission's district offices, which has been opposed by opposition parties.

"I wish to add my voice to those who have called on the EC to reconsider its decision to restrict the registration exercise to its district offices only," said the Coalition of National Youth Organizers.

"Obtaining a voter ID card confirms one's right to vote, and access to one should be simple and not limited by location." Every Ghanaian deserves the opportunity to exercise his or her democratic right.

"I strongly urge the Electoral Commission to facilitate the registration process in all of its electoral areas, allowing for easy access and reducing the burden on citizens seeking to register."

He stated that this is only in accordance with CI 91 rule 22(b) as revised by CI 126.
