The Next Chief Justice Should Be Forthright, Courageous, And Less Corrupt — Kwaku Ansa-Asare

Kwaku Ansa-Asare, a former director of the Ghana School of Law, believes that the next Chief Justice should be forthright, courageous, and less corrupt.

According to Mr. Ansa-Asare, the outgoing Chief Justice, Justice Anin-Yeboah, has neglected to uphold these qualities, necessitating that the incoming Chief Justice do so.

Mr. Ansa-Asare stated on JoyNews' PM Express, "What we are looking for in a new Chief Justice is a person with integrity, honesty, candor, and courage, who can look the governance institution in the eye, including their heads, and tell them the truth, and who will not try to curry favor with the authorities, particularly the president.

"In the past three years, our chief justices have not lived up to my expectations of being courageous and daring individuals. I therefore anticipate that the next chief justice will be endowed with courage, vitality, integrity, candor, and all the rest. Less corrupt with no corrupt items in his or her possession."

His remark follows the nomination of JSC Gertrude Arab Esaaba Torkonoo for the astute position by President Akufo-Addo.

In a letter to the Council of State dated April 25, the President explained that her nomination is intended to prevent a vacancy following the retirement of the current chief justice on May 24.

The nomination of Justice Torkornoo will be evaluated by Parliament, which will either approve or reject her nomination.

If approved, she will become Ghana's third female Chief Justice, following Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
