A planetarium is a'sky theater' in which sophisticated projectors produce a representation of the night sky on a dome ceiling. An observatory is a place where telescopes are used to observe the actual night sky, hence unlike a planetarium, the dome of an observatory does open.
The Ghana Planetarium was officially launched on a crisp Thursday, January 22nd, 2009, by the British High Commissioner, His Excellency Dr. Nicholas Westcott, who graced the ceremony.
The French Ambassador, the Chief of Nungua and his entourage, the Director of the British Council, and Dave Weinrich from Minnesota were among the prominent guests who made this enormous initiative feasible.
Since its inception in 2009, the Ghana Planetarium has had the distinction of being the world's first.
