Why The Ghc200 Note Has Been Named After NPP's Charles Opoku

Following the conclusion of the recent by-election in Assin North, some individuals have taken to social media to mock the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for parliament, Mr. Charles Opoku.

Netizens and social media critics have named the Two Hundred Ghana Cedi (GHc200) after the defeated parliamentary candidate due to allegations that his party purchased votes, but he still lost.

Evangelists Richard Prah, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) spokesperson in the Ashanti Region, stated on the radio that the GHc200 note is now known as Charles Opoku.

Some voters in the area allege they were paid 200 cedis to vote for the NPP candidate, and have composed songs in a viral video referring to the money as "me-dia me-de Charles Opoku sika na ye pe" in Twi.

Mr. Prah stated on Ultimate FM in Kumasi, "Let me tell you something interesting about the Assin North elections; the NPP thought they could buy the elections, so they went with money, but the people rejected them"

"In their minds, they believed they were purchasing the elections with money, but this was a by-election as in By-Election, not a purchase as in intending to purchase something oo. They made an error. Now in Assin, the 200 cedis are referred to as Charles Opoku because the money given to influence the vote was ineffective.

They were seen displaying the money they received and claiming they would spend Charles Opoku's money," he added.

Both the NPP and the NDC made allegations of vote-buying in the recently concluded elections.

The ruling NPP was accused of giving some electorates 200 cedis, while the opposition NDC was accused of giving each voter 100 cedis.

James Gyakye Quayson of the NDC won the election and will represent the Assin North constituency again after the Supreme Court voided the 2020 elections due to allegations that he held dual citizenship during the elections.
