SAFETY ALERT FOR MINERS AND CONCERNED GHANAIANS BY Livingstone Awuvey, Mining Engineer

Mon, 2 Oct 2023 Source: Nana Boateng kakape

We're in our second raining season in Ghana, and following that , there's observation of rising flood and failure trends around the country.

I want to use this opportunity to urge fellow miners around the country , and beyond to remain cautious and exercise full control with standard operating procedures in the working environment .

Slopes should be highly monitored and , grounds highly supported in case of underground mining .

Waste Dumps should be monitored effectively, and windrow heights checked continuously, competent materials should be used in constructing windrows .

All supervisors in operations are encouraged to demonstrate vigilance and communicate actively with team mates to ensure collaborative delivery on tasks .

Geotec is encouraged to actively monitor slope monitoring equipment available and report promptly on variances on slope stability and actions taken to align all team mates

Dewatering teams should be highly alert and put in place extra pumps if need be to mitigate potential torrential hostilities as a result of flood. Same applies to TSF management teams .

Ground , slope and structural failures can be fatal and therefore cautions must be taken proactively to avoid same whenever possible .

Active supervision is called for especially at this quarter of the year .

Care must also be taken to avoid slip and falls whenever in the pit

Right PPEs must be worn at all times in operational environments and pre-start checks done for vehicles patronizing the pit .

Operators fatigue statuses should be checked regularly to ensure that they can stay alert on the job especially as the times call for full concentration on the job. They should also comply with pre-start check routines .

Thank you all so much, this is just a reminder to all stakeholders in the mining and allied industries to exercise caution in line of duties due to emerging climate change threats facing all of us .
