PSG defender Achraf Hakimi faces criminal investigation after rape allegation

Accusations of rape have led to a judicial investigation into Paris St. Germain and Moroccan back Achraf Hakimi.

A woman, now 24, says Hakimi physically attacked her at his Paris apartment on February 25; Hakimi, however, rejects the allegations.

Hakimi was the target of “attempted extortion,” according to the player’s counsel.

According to Friday’s statement from the Nanterre prosecutors office, Hakimi has been put under police surveillance and is not allowed to contact the alleged victim.

Hakimi, 24, “firmly rejects all the allegations against him,” as his counsel Fanny Colin puts it, and “he finally has the chance to defend himself” thanks to the inquiry.

“The club supports the player, who has firmly denied the accusations and trusts the justice system,” PSG said in a statement on Thursday.

“Paris St-Germain is an institution that promotes respect on and off the pitch.”

PSG manager Christophe Galtier, speaking at a press briefing on Friday, dodged questions about the investigation.

Wednesday night will be the second game of the Champions League quarterfinal between the league champions from Ligue 1 and Bayern Munich. Hakimi is expected to return to action after a muscle injury.

It is our hope, according to our medical team, that he will be able to play against Munich, Galtier said.

Hakimi, who was born in Spain, was instrumental in getting Morocco to the World Cup quarterfinals in Qatar, where they made history by becoming the first African side to do so.

As a result of his efforts, he was named to the FIFPro men’s global team of the year and honored at Monday night’s Best FIFA Football Awards event in Paris.
