Sulley Muntari, a former midfielder for Ghana and Inter Milan, has declared his retirement from the game at the age of 38.

Muntari, who played for the Black Stars on 80 occasions and scored 20 goals, has been without a club since leaving Hearts of Oak of the Ghana Premier League in the summer.

He started his playing career with the local team Liberty Professionals before moving on to the Serie A team Udinese, where he spent five years.

The 2010 champion of the Champions League also played for Sunderland and Portsmouth in the English Premier League.

"I only spent a short time with the neighborhood team, Hearts of Oak. I was asked to play by my son. After almost three years without playing, my son asked me to go and play. I did that, but I'm finished now," Muntari remarked on Monday to Sky Sports.

Between 2002 and 2014, Muntari played for Ghana and was essential to the nation's qualification for the World Cups in Germany (2006), South Africa (2010), and Brazil (2014).

What the former Sunderland player will do after his retirement is unknown. He is presently in the Black Stars' camp at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
