Medikal, a popular rapper, has urged young men who impersonate celebrities to stop doing so. In a video shared on social media, he expressed concern that attention has been shifted towards these impersonators, rather than the hardworking musicians who created the music.
While he believes it is flattering for anyone to look like a celebrity, he thinks that these lookalikes are taking advantage of the artists and their work. Instead, he advises them to find their own source of income.
Medikal encourages others to work hard and earn more money, and thus no true fan of his would beg others for money on social media. The rise in celebrity lookalikes for artistes has caused concern among the public, with some calling for action.
According to legal practitioner Godwin Selasi Owusu, impersonation of an individual is a criminal act, and culprits could face up to 20 years in jail if taken to court. While having a physical resemblance with someone is not illegal, their activities and intentions behind impersonating someone could lead to criminal or civil liability.
