The Commanding Officer (CO) of 4 Infantry Battalion, Lt Col Sebastian Abraham Arhin has stated that the Military is ready to help the President Akufo Addo led-government to fight against illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.
According to him, his Unit has been notified by the government to prepare themselves to give critical support to the fight against the menace.
“So far as we have received letter from government concerning the fight against galamsey operators, we are waiting for instruction from government then we will visit various galamsey areas to stop the galamsey operators” he told Osei Kwadwo of Kumasi based, Abusua FM after a peace walk.
The Akufo-Addo administration since taking over in January has been on a war-path with galamsey operators.
A directive went into effect in March ordering illegal miners to leave their concession within a three week ultimatum and submit to government oversight to formalize their operations pursuant to mining standards in the sector.
Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Mr. Amewu reiterates that government is aggressive on streamlining the process to grant permits for legal miners.
“The NPP administration is not anti-mining government but we want to engage mining in a more sustainable and environmental friendly manner. And anybody that is ready to do that is welcome.”
