Previous governments’ inability to meet the housing needs of Ghanaians has created a backlog where out of the 150,000 units per annum to be supplied, less than 40 percent have actually been provided, Vice President Bawumia has disclosed.
To curb this situation, the Akufo-Addo led administration has partnered with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and Sustainable Housing Solutions (SHS) Limited to provide a decent affordable house which contains all the needed amenities Ghanaians will look out for, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia noted.
According to him, the construction of the 100,000 houses nationwide by these development partners is going to transform the lives of Ghanaians facing housing deficits, thereby labelling the project as a ‘game-changer’.
He said, this project “is going to be a game-changer, so many benefits will come from this but as we said, this comes with a mortgage system to enable working Ghanaians purchase a home that comes with the amenities all a decent home should contain which is also going to be environmentally friendly”.
“This UNOPS initiative which we are launching today sets out to construct 100,000 affordable housing units nationally over the next 10 years”, he added.
Speaking at the official launch of the Amasaman district of the Affordable Housing Project, the Vice President noted that the Amasaman site will contain 65,000 houses.
The Affordable Housing Project, Dr Bawumia further said will employ about 100,000 people both directly and indirectly across all sectors including constructions to procurements, supply services, finance and the real estate industries.
He stated that the Amasaman project, costing over 5 billion dollars is solely funded by the UNOPS with government playing a facilitating role, noting that the programme arrangement does not impose any financial liability on government and requires no government guarantees.
Dr Bawumia assured Ghanaians that the project will rely heavily on local contractors, resources and labour.
