NDC considering e-voting at next Congress – Nketia

The retained General Secretary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Aseidu Nketia has said the party is considering venturing into electronic voting or decentralizing the voting process in electing its national executives to make the process faster.

The NDC has been criticized for the slow pace at which it saw its 9th National Delegates Congress through, over the weekend at the Ghana Trade Fair Centre on Saturday, 17 November 2018 through to Sunday, 18 November.

Mr James Agyenim-Boateng, the spokesperson for the campaign team of former President John Dramani Mahama, told the critics off, saying the party’s objective was to elect national leaders through a credible and transparent means and not to have the fastest event.

The 9th National Annual Congress lasted for close to 48 hours. About 15,000 people made up of 9,350 delegates and 5,650 observers, participated in the event.

Speaking to Moro Awudu on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Monday, 19 November 2018, Mr Nketia noted that the party is considering other options to quicken the process.

He said: “We’re considering two major options, that is, e-voting so that the voting could be faster so that tallying could be instant. That is one of the things we considered seriously even before settling on this manual one."

"We didn’t implement it for certain key fears which we are yet to address, and then some consideration was decentralizing – using inter-connectivity so that the delegates can be at their various regional centres and then the events that are happening can be watched across the board and participated across the board.”
