One person who was trapped in a mining pit at Ekorso in the Atewa West District of the Eastern Region on Monday has died.
He was among three other illegal miners, popularly known as ‘galamseyers’, who were trapped in an old mining site owned by Metahauson Mining Company.
Police in the area verified that the three had gone there to engage in 'galamsey'.
During the process of mining, the pit caved in on them leading to the death of one miner identified as Kofi Ohene, 23 years. His body has since been retrieved from the pit.
“No mark of violence was found on the deceased body except mud,” the police said in a statement after initial assessment and inspection.
The two other miners, who are yet to be identified, escaped unhurt.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been sent to Kibi government hospital morgue for autopsy.
