Accra, July 19, GNA - Prince Vanderpuye-Orgle, Chairman of the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) has said the Association will soon embark on a tour of some educational institutions as part efforts to make the sport popular among the youth.

Speaking to the GNA Sports in Accra on Thursday, Mr Vanderpuye-Orgle said that his outfit has completed the required arrangements to generate the interest of the youth in the sport. The GCA boss regretted that the sport has been neglected for many years and it is therefore in the right direction for the Association to embark on such a project to save the sport from its imminent collapse. Mr Vanderpuye-Orgle said that the Association plans to send some members of its technical team and players to some selected institutions across the country to introduce the students to the basic rudiments of the game of Cricket.

"There is currently a pilot programme taking place at Achimota College in Accra which has produced some batsmen for the national team."

He added that plans are far advanced to include Cricket as one of the sporting disciplines at the Inter-Collegiate Sports Festivals. The Chairman of the GCA called on corporate bodies to support the game of Cricket to ensure its development in the country as well as assisting the Association to implement its programmes to achieve the desired goals.

The national U-19 team is scheduled to participate in the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup qualifiers scheduled for Benoni City, South Africa next month.
