The old structures, which had a sand-based astro turf constructed in 1999, had to be pulled down in amatter of days for the new hockey staduim to be built in five months.

The President, H.E.Prof.John Evans Atta Mills,himself one-time national hockey player, superintended the start of the project barely a month after coming into office.

The 1,200-seating capacity stadium with a hostal facility was built by Ghanaian construction giant Miceletti and Company Limited, the same company that renovated the Accra Sports Stadium [now Ohene Djan Stadium] for the CAN 2008 football tournment.
