Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will today, September 16, 2021, host the Extraordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The Summit will help member states to brainstorm over the political situation in the Republic of Guinea.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, who disclosed this at a press briefing said the summit is to provide the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government with an account of their visit to the West African state and deliberate on the way forward.

The Minister stated that the forthcoming extraordinary session of the ECOWAS Authority is, therefore, being held to enable the high-level mission report to the Authority, after which the latter will deliberate and consider the next steps to be taken towards the restoration of the country to the path of democratic governance and constitutional rule.

“The summit will, therefore, have a single agenda where I will lay before the Authority the report of the ECOWAS High-Level Mission to Guinea, which was undertaken on Friday, 10th September 2021,” she added.

She said currently, seven (7) Heads of State and Government have confirmed their participation.

She further disclosed that Nigeria will be represented by their Vice-President whereas Sierra Leone and The Gambia will be represented by their Foreign Affairs Ministers.

She explained that the session will also see the participation of the President and Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission.

The roads to be blocked are the Opeibea route along the Liberation Road through to the Independence Avenue to the National Theatre and onto the Gamel Abdul Nasser Avenue to the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel.

Guinea suspended by ECOWAS

ECOWAS recently suspended Guinea asking the country to return to “normal constitutional order” after President Alpha Conde was ousted in a coup by special forces.

The bloc urged Guinea “to put in place a process that will allow a rapid return to normal constitutional order.”

ECOWAS sent a mediation mission to Guinea’s capital, Conakry, on Thursday.

The United Nations and African Union have also condemned the military coup.
