Shatta Wale outlines his objectives for collaborations

• He maintains that as a businessman, he would do collaborations if it pays

Shatta Wale has insisted that he will not collaborate with Ghanaian musicians if the purpose is to please Ghanaians.

The musician, making a strong case for his collaborations on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, Wednesday, said he would only do collaborations if it is financially rewarding.

“I have songs I’m working on with Sarkodie, Stonebwoy… I’ve sent Samini something. We can do all these things for Ghanaians but we are not here to impress Ghanaians. I’m about the business. Shatta Wale featuring Samini could have been the biggest song in Ghana but I did a song with Samini at a point where he realized we should do a song”, Shatta Wale said.

“The business around this thing is not to create an impression but it’s about making money and feeding fans. If people want us to do collaborations like this, I’d say the structures are not right for us to know how much we’d make if Sarkodie and I do collaboration. Collaborations are beautiful and nice but after that, who pays for the light bills? Everyone in the industry is struggling”, he added.

Shatta Wale’s remark was a reaction to a question about why he is not focusing on featuring equally great Ghanaian musicians if unsuccessful international collaborations are delaying the release of his third studio album, ‘Gift of God’.

The musician had said the kinds of artistes he needs on the album, coupled with the fact that he is not on any label have been the challenges.

“The key people on the album are what I’m waiting for now. It’s not easy to get certain artistes on your album just like that because these are bigger artistes who are working with bigger labels”, Shatta Wale said.

He continued: “I’m an independent artiste. If I had a label, everything would be working for me.”

According to him, he is not in a hurry to release the album. He stressed that even if it would take him five years to get things right, he would.
