Popular Ghanaian Hiplife artiste Barima Sidney has disclosed that Kuami Eugene shied away from featuring on the remix of his hit song Africa Money after he (Kuami Eugene) initially requested for the remix.
Speaking on a recent interview with Bryt TV monitored by GhanaWeb, Barima Sidney disclosed that he bought into Kuami Eugene’s idea of remixing the song after he turned down several requests from other artistes.
“Recently I was there and I was approached by Kuami Eugene that we should remix Africa Money. I mean this Africa Money song, I’ve had request from Magic System of Premier Gaou and Freddie Mieway. Because when you do a song and you see the height it attains, you need to be cautious when working on a remix, it is either you flop or it goes. If you don’t have a correct idea on how to do it, normally you don’t rush into it. So this Kuami Eugene came up with the idea, I thought it was a good idea so I bought into it,” he stated.
According to Sidney, the 2020 VGMA Artiste of the Year subsequently chickened out of remixing the song on the grounds that it was too political.
“When I call him, he will be doing this and that. Then finally his manager told me he said he was afraid and that Africa Money is too political.”
Sidney wondered why Kuami Eugene would come to him if he knew he was going to cower out.
“I was on my own when you called me for a remix and I asked you to play the beat because you are also a beatmaker. Then I turn out to be the one chasing you. Sometimes people feel that we don’t want to do collaborations with these young guys. But if we tell you what happens behind the scenes sometimes you will be shocked,” he added.
Sidney’s Africa Money following its release in 2011 went on to become a continental hit and extended to the rest of the globe.
The song with politically controversial lines such as “poor man dey work, rich dey enjoy” talks about corruption by public officials.
