Award-winning highlife and afro-pop musician, Kuami Eugene has lashed out at Ghanaian disc jockeys (DJs) who demand kickbacks from local stars after playing their songs.
A section of Ghanaians have registered their displeasure towards the percentage of airplay Ghanaian DJs and radio presenters give to foreign music, especially Nigerian music.
This even led to the creation of series of social media campaigns which asks DJs and presenters to give a ‘reasonable’ amount of airtime to local music.
A lot of musicians have bemoaned the treatment. And to add to this, Kuami Eugene says the DJs should forget about kickbacks and support local stars.
He made the statement during an interview on Accra FM.
“I heard a DJ claiming that we don’t appreciate when they play our music,” he said. “So, I asked him, ‘have Davido, P-Square, Tiwa Savage and Wizkid ever called you for playing their music?’”
He continued that there’s no need giving kickbacks because local stars and DJs are one family.
“Don’t play our music with the mindset that we will give you kickbacks – play because we are one family.”
