A situationship is a modern, undefined relationship where two people have a connection and spend time together but without clear commitment. Unlike "friends with benefits," which focuses on casual hookups, a situationship involves more conversation and emotional connection, often creating ambiguity. Situationships can be transitional phases as people get to know each other or can remain stagnant without moving toward a committed relationship. Often, they begin with the potential for something deeper but may stay in a gray area, sometimes due to convenience for one or both parties.

1 NO Progress

Key relationship milestones that show progress include having dinners together, spending weekends together, meeting each other’s friends and family, sharing holidays, becoming exclusive, and saying “I love you.” When these milestones are absent, it may be a red flag for lack of commitment.

2 You're Not Integrated Into Their Life

As a relationship deepens, couples share experiences like visiting favorite spots, meeting each other's friends and colleagues, and being featured on social media. If these integrations don't happen, it may signal that the relationship is not progressing toward a more meaningful connection.

3 There Is No Future Talk

In a healthy relationship, planning for the future is common, like discussing upcoming events or trips. If your partner isn’t involving you in plans, it may indicate they don’t see you as part of their long-term future.

4 There Is No Concrete Proof You're a Couple

If his friends, family, and social media don't acknowledge your existence, it may signal a lack of commitment or interest in moving the relationship forward, even if it's understandable early on.

5 You Have Not Had the "Define the Relationship" Talk

If you’ve been in a relationship for three to six months without discussing its definition (DTR), it’s unusual and could indicate a lack of commitment. If you’re hoping for a deeper connection, you may need to initiate the conversation to clarify where the relationship is headed.

6 Plans Are Inconsistent and Last-Minute

A lack of effort in planning and investing time to get to know you is a clear sign that the person is not committed to the relationship. Even spontaneous individuals will make plans in advance if they are genuinely interested in impressing someone.

A situationship can work if both people are on the same page, especially for something casual. However, if you're feeling frustrated, it’s important to initiate a DTR conversation to clarify where things stand. You won’t know until you ask
