John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, has pledged to amend laws to end indiscriminate mining in forest reserves if elected.
He highlighted that illegal mining is contaminating water sources and affecting crop production, posing a threat to future generations.
Mahama stated that banning mining in forest reserves would be non-negotiable and vowed to re-amend the law that permits it. He emphasized the need to protect forest reserves to combat climate change.
Additionally, Mahama promised to establish district offices for agencies overseeing the mining sector and ensure enforcement through a Minerals Commission office.
